Girls' Night Out

I very rarely have a girls' night out. Sometimes I'll get out by myself in order to do some shopping that would be impossible if I were accompanied by the rest of my family. But going out with friends rarely happens. Maybe once a year.

My friend Kelli called me yesterday afternoon and asked if I wanted to go to the movies. But first, let me back up a little. About a week and a half ago, Kelli called to chat and during our chat she asked me if I had seen the Twilight movies. We got to talking about them (yes, I've seen the movies and read all of the books. Twice. Don't judge me unless you've read them. They really are good.) She hadn't read the books, but she had just finished watching the second movie and really wanted to go see the third one which is out in theaters right now. I hadn't seen it yet, so we decided we would do it soon.

Fast forward to yesterday and we made plans to go to the 7:30 showing at a local theater. But first me and the guys went over to their house for supper. Kelli picked up a to-go order from Chili's and we ate at their house. Which is nice when you have two 5 year old's (in 20 days technically) and a 1 year old. Then she and I headed out to the movies leaving the dads behind to take care of some crazy boys.

I was so stuffed from my dinner, I didn't even get anything to eat or drink which is pretty amazing because I can't hardly resist the yumminess that is concessions.

The movie was really good. Definitely the best from this series so far. I still feel like books-turned-movies tend to be really lacking on screen. If I hadn't read the books, I would feel confused about some things that aren't addressed in the movies. And I spent most of the ride home filling Kelli in on those details that weren't made clear (without giving away anything from the last book. I promise!)

While I'm sure our night didn't nearly measure up to many other girls' nights out, it was still pretty fun since we rarely get to do stuff like that. Her birthday is coming up in a few weeks, so we may just have to do this again soon.

And as an aside, I don't understand why people are vocal in their criticism and disdain for parents who bring small children on flights, yet we seldom hear criticism of the parents who choose to bring their small children to an adult movie. And by small children I mean a 2 year old and a baby younger than 1. To a movie starting at what should be close to their bedtime.

So instead of focusing on a movie that I paid $10 to see while leaving my own children behind so they won't disturb and distract me and the rest of the movie-goers, I get to watch a mom and a dad alternate pacing back and forth with their baby (right in front of me, as we were on the front row of the "stadium seats"). Seriously? It's not "necessary" for parents to bring their babies to movies. (Kids movie? Have at it. When you go to see a kids movie, you expect to see and hear small children.) Wait until the movie is available to rent and watch it in the privacy of your own home after putting your kids to bed. Or let them waller all over you while watching it, if that's your druthers. Which it apparently is for those who take their kids to the movies with them.

However, there are times that call for parents to travel by plane with their small children. (Wedding, funeral, attempt to avoid an excruciatingly long drive in order to visit family you haven't seen in forever...) I don't want to see eye rolls and hear sighs when I enter a plane with my child, yet I could bring a squalling kid up well past their bedtime to a movie they shouldn't even be seeing and no one will even bat an eye.

And the best part about the whole scenario was the dad verbally (and loudly) reprimanding his BABY for crying.
