Could I maybe get one that's carbonated this time?

I knew this morning when my cell phone rang that it was not going to be good news. Usually when you get a phone call from your doctor, they aren't calling to tell you to have a good day and that you're the epitome of health.

So I'm backing out of the driveway, on my way to take Garrett to "school" and myself to work, when my phone starts vibrating in my pocket. I pull it out and see that my ob/gyn's office is calling me. Since I had my glucose tolerance test on Monday and was specifically told that I wouldn't hear from them unless it was bad news, I knew this was my bad news.

Lovely.

The nurse told me that my number was slightly elevated (who knows what that means, hopefully exactly what she said and not "Ridiculously high and you might as well go ahead and consider yourself a diabetic, but we'll humor you and do this additional test because we love billing you whenever possible.") and I needed to come back in for the 3 hour glucose tolerance test.

I really thought I was going to go crazy during the 1 hour test, I'm not all that sure how I'm going to survive the 3 hour test with my sanity intact and without passing out in the waiting room from not eating for 14+ hours. The sad part of that is, in the middle of my 1 hour wait, I got to pass some of the time by going back to pee in a cup, step on a scale, get my blood pressure checked, listen to the baby's heartbeat, and visit with my doctor. You would think with all of that to help pass the time, it wouldn't have felt like 5 hours of sitting in the waiting room rereading the same story in the same magazine over and over.

But next week, I won't have anything to pass the time, save for whatever I might bring with me into the office, along with any decent magazine I might be able to scrounge up. I wonder what they would think if I walked in with a laptop and asked them if they had wi-fi. Surfing the internet would atleast help to kill some of that time, and I could even blog about the crazy people that I see. But I'm not going to be that person. The one who appears to be so important and busy that they can't spend even a brief amount of time in the doctor's waiting room without being attached to their laptop and "working". So I'll stick with a book and hope that it keeps me entertained in between my chugging of the gross "drink" and getting stuck like a pin cushion. I have a bad tendency of feeling faint, so I think that my biggest worry is going from before midnight the previous night until noon the next day without eating anything. I should have a pizza delivered to my car for the minute that I walk out that door.

Sidenote: Yes, I realize gestational diabetes is certainly not the end of the world and just because I have to do the 3 hour test, it does not mean that I already have gestational diabetes. I have diabetics on both sides of my family so I'm pretty much doomed to eventually be diabetic. But I would prefer to not have to deal with this 3 hour test. I would almost rather they just tell me I have GD and get on to the diet that they'll give me. Since I have to endure this test, then I hope for good results, but it certainly won't kill me if they tell me what I don't want to hear.

Lydia, I know that it is not fun to do the test...you might want to take a friend along to talk to? Trust me, you would rather they do the test and rule it out than for them to go with the first one and say that it is GD. It is not just a diet they put you on.

I had GD with both of my boys and it adds a whole new dimension to pregnancy....like the trips to the diabetic counselor; pricking your finger throughout the day to check your sugar; logging every bite of food going into your mouth; taking medication (either pills or shots); stress tests on the baby at the hospital(2x per week from week 32); more trips to the doctor or better yet to a 2nd doctor just for the diabetes (like with Andrew); more sonograms to check to make sure the baby isn't getting too big and then when the baby is the ultimate c-section. FUN STUFF.

I agree with 2 boys' mom! I had GD with Jenna and Landon and it is no fun. I took my blood 3 times a day and had to call my numbers into the dr once a week. The diet was very strict, measuring everything and counting it all. You couldn't cheat on it either, because it would show up in your numbers and then you'd feel guilty!

Hope the test turns out great. I didn't mind the three hour wait at all. I took a book, went for a walk to the gift shop, actually got to LOOK around without anyone wanting anything!! I've had to do it once or twice since having Landon!! I really hate the orange drink though. It's like orange vbs kool-aid only from the devil!!!

Lydia, It will be like a 3 hour break just for you. Take a book and try to enjoy the time alone....I'll be praying that the test is negative and your 'slightly elevated' numbers were just that!!

I agree with Mary! LOL enjoy those three hours alone. Buy some magazines you really want to read or a new, good book. Like we already discussed I had to do the three hour one both times and the test always came back negative. I enjoyed the quiet time and read. I'll be curious to see how it goes.
Good luck!
