Kid Interview

Some of you have seen these "Kid Interviews" on Facebook.  My sister did one with my 6 year old niece, Riley and it was really funny.  So I decided to do one with Garrett and see where it went.  He's 3 and a half, for those who don't know.

1. What is something Momma always says to you?
-No (hmm, I wonder why?)

2. What makes Momma happy?
-When I go to time out.  (I haven't a clue why he thinks that.  I certainly don't smile and laugh while he's in time out.)

3. What makes Momma sad?
-When she makes this face (and he made a sad face).

4. How does Momma make you laugh?
-When she's funny (and he mimicked some sort of weird, goofy dance that I've never done before.)

5. What was Momma like as a child?
-(He grabbed my hair and held it up high on my head like a pony tail) and said "That's a girl."

6. How old is Momma?
-3 (haha, I wish.  He said Daddy was 3, too.)

7. How tall is Momma?
-Big giant. (then he acted out a big giant, stomping around the living and saying "Fee, Fi, Fo, Fum.")

8. What is Momma's favorite thing to do?
-Wash her hands and go night night.  (?? The sleeping I can understand, but washing my hands?  I guess he hears me harping on him about the right way to wash his hands and thinks I love doing it.)

9. What is Momma really good at?
-Going to bed.  (haha.  That made me laugh a lot.)

10. What is Momma not very good at?
-Building a castle.  (Apparently my lego/block skills are lacking.)

11. What does Momma do for a job?
-Work in the bathroom.  (?? I don't clean the bathrooms that often.)

12. What is Momma's favorite food?
-Hamburgers (I'm sure he said this because that's what we had for supper tonight.)

13. If Momma were a cartoon character, who would I be?
-Cars

14. What do you and Momma do together?
-Sleep and draw.  (His current obsession is trying to get to sleep in our bed any chance he gets, so I guess he thought this answer would butter me up to let him sleep with us tonight.  Fat chance, kid.)

15. How do you know Momma loves you?
-You are crazy.  (That's verbatim.  I don't know either.)

16. What does Momma like most about Daddy?
-Going to work. (haha)

17. Where is Momma's favorite place to go?
-Turn left to go to Walmart. (again, verbatim.  And we actually do turn left to go to Walmart.)

18. Who is God?
-God saves from the fire. (I thought that was a really interesting answer.  We've not quite gotten to the point of discussing hell yet, so he either said this at random, or Sunday school is getting much deeper than it did when I was a kid.)

19. Where does He live?
-In your belly.  (Cooper lives there, so apparently God does too.)

20. Who made the world?
-Daddy (haha)

21. Who is your best friend?
-Jiminy Cricket (he saw Pinocchio for the first time today.)

22. How tall are you?
-3

Just wanted to let you know that this interview was conducted while Garrett ran at full speed around the living room and many of these questions were asked multiple times before he gave me an answer.  I know it probably sounds nearly impossible to get a 3 year old boy to answer all these questions, so I didn't want anyone picturing him sitting sedately beside me while I asked each question.  Haha, that's very far from the case.  And by number 21, he was very much over the whole interview.

6 Months Pregnant

I know that the majority of the people who read my blog are also friends of mine on facebook, which means they've seen the following picture. But in case there's a few of you who have not, I wanted to share my 6 months pregnant profile shot. I've included one other one that did not get posted on facebook so the rest of you don't get bored.

Also, in case you haven't heard, I got my results back from the 3 hour glucose test and it came back normal, so I'm very relieved. I think that's it for tests with this pregnancy. I just have the usual appointments to check the heartbeat and eventually I'll get to the point where my ob will do internal exams to see if I'm dilating any. I have to admit that I'm already looking forward to those. But I also want to enjoy my pregnancy as much as possible since this is the last one, barring something humorous from God.

I can now resume my eating of carbs and sugar.

I don't have the results yet, but I survived the 3 hour test, as we all knew I would.  Turns out I was misinformed on how those things go down.  You only have to drink that stuff once, not 3 times.  Thank goodness!  But it's stronger and sweeter than the stuff for the one hour, which was very obvious.

One of my arms has better veins than the other for blood work, so I got stuck 4 times in my left arm.  On top of the blood draw from last week.  I'm sure it's going to look lovely tomorrow.  Not to mention the marks from the multiple band aids that were put on and ripped off.

But besides the using of my arm as a pincushion, the experience wasn't all that bad.  Thankfully the doctor's office is pretty calm on Tuesday mornings, so there was never more than 3 people in the waiting room at a time, which is pretty rare for this office which has about 10 doctors and midwives total (not there all at once, obviously).  The only complaint I would have is that someone scheduled the aquarium maintenance to be performed this morning.  And that stunk!  I'm just glad I didn't smell it immediately after drinking that stuff and that I also wasn't newly pregnant.  I'm not sure I could have just sat there while the tank was being cleaned and water changed.  Didn't realize the funky smell that accompanies that procedure.

Thankfully the book that I brought was entertaining which made the morning pass by relatively fast.  I would call it pretty similar to "The Devil Wears Prada".  Who knows if the movie will be similar to that one, but I liked that movie, so maybe this one has hope.  I got about 2/3 of the way through the book during my 3 hour stint in the waiting room and have since finished it this afternoon.

One thing that I discovered during my time there was that Garrett is very well behaved when he accompanies me to my doctor visits.  There were some pretty wild kids that came through the doctor's office this morning.  So I now have much more of an appreciation for his ability to somehow maintain his self control while we're there.  I can't really say that of his time at home, but atleast at the doctor's office, he's able to reign in the craziness.

Just today he came to me in the kitchen, put his shoes on and said "I need to go outside and pee in the grass".  To which I firmly told him no and directed him towards the bathroom.  To which he argued his point multiple times until he finally got that I wasn't letting him use our grass as a port a potty (not unless we're already out there, no special bathroom trips to the out-of-doors.  This isn't "Little House on the Prairie").  He also told his teacher that he did not like the sandwich that I sent for his lunch today.  Apparently it was discussed at length because she made a note of it on his paper that came home.  And she never does that.  I'm not sure what he didn't like about the ham sandwich with a little mustard, on wheat bread, cut into 4 squares, which he eats every. single. school day.  But apparently today it wasn't working for him.  It might have been because I wrapped it in plastic wrap rather than putting it in a sandwich bag because we were all out of them.  You know that plastic wrap, it totally changes the taste of a sandwich.

Calling all foodies!

I need your recipe and food ideas.  We're feeling the economic pinch just as much as everyone else which means I'm digging through our freezer trying to use up the food in there rather than buy something else.  We currently have a lot of frozen steak and hamburger right now.  Which we're grilling regularly, but what else can I do with them?  Obviously I have more ideas of what to do with hamburger than I do with the steak, but I will take any suggestions you might have for either so that we don't get tired of the same meals and we can continue to attempt to go through our freezer and use everything up before it goes bad.

So here's what I have off the top of my head for both.  You contribute what you can.  If you don't have a recipe, but you know of a meal that uses one or the other and you love it, just let me know.  I'll look online for the recipe.  I'm just needing a jumping off point with this.

Steak:
grilled steak (hah)
steak fajitas
steak quesadillas (can you tell I live in Texas and eat Tex Mex?)
??? I don't know what else to do with the steak

Hamburger:
grilled hamburgers (double hah)
spaghetti
tacos
??? I'm drawing a blank now, so apparently I don't have more ideas for the hamburger than I do for the steak.

And for those wondering why we have such an abundance of these, we have had those meat guys come to our neighborhood selling meat at a deep discount and also throwing some in for free when we buy from them.  We've only done this twice and didn't get a large amount, but there's more than enough steak and hamburger in our freezer to get us by the next few weeks/months.

So now I turn to you for your meal and recipe ideas.

Randomness

Thanks for the comments on the glucose test post.  I will admit that I was initially feeling very apprehensive about my retest on Tuesday.  I kind of felt like I did in school when I failed a test and had to retake it.  Like I wasn't quite up to par.  (Not that I failed many tests...)  But thanks to Beth and Alicia, I feel a little more prepared for what might be in store if I was to fail the test, and Mary and everyone else who has reminded me to enjoy the 3 hours of mostly sedentary time.  I bought a new book today that I'm withholding from myself until Tuesday morning.  So that will help to pass the time pretty quickly.  I went with "Confessions of a Shopaholic".  Certainly not the "Lost" of the book realm, but I think waiting in the doctor's office requires more of a mindless reading material.  Plus the movie looks cute, so I may as well read the book before I see it.  So I can be disappointed like I always am once I see the movie after reading the book.

On to our weekend, Garrett is now officially in his new bedroom.  We haven't hung anything on the walls yet, but everything is in his new room, the painting is finished, new curtains are hung, etc.  His first night in his room was NOT good.  I really hope he'll adjust quickly.  We've taken off the bedrail on his bed because he never really seemed to sleep up next to it, so I don't think he needs it.  And that didn't seem to be his problem last night.  He was just very restless and crying out in his sleep a lot.  Then at 3am he came to our room.  I know I need to put an end to that before it becomes a habit for him, but I didn't last night.  I will soon, though.  But last night, when he came in our room I asked him what he was doing and he said "Nuffing", as he climbed into our bed with his blanket.  I'm not sure why he thought that was "nuffing".  Hopefully tonight will be much better.  Would it be terribly mean of me to lock our bedroom door after we go to bed?  Yeah, I figured you would think so.  As soon as we get everything hung on the walls like we want, then I'll post pictures of the room makeover.

Once I get this test out of the way, we'll be looking forward to visiting with several members of my family this week.  First, my aunt, uncle, cousin, her kids, my grandparents, and another uncle are all coming over to my house for a visit on Friday.  My cousin will be going back to Massachusetts next week after spending over a month in Texas visiting her family.  She's never been to my house before, so they're all coming over to spend the day and eat lunch with us.  Then on Friday night, my youngest sister and brother, Christie and Jesse, will be coming to my house from Indiana.  They'll be on their way to a wedding in south Texas, so they're stopping by our house for some free food and lodging.  Then I'm using them as free postal service to send birthday gifts back to my parents and my nephew who all have birthdays coming up as well as a gift for my yet-to-be-born nephew who will be joining us in less than a month.

So we're looking forward to seeing everyone on Friday.  Garrett thinks his cousin Jake is coming because we bought his birthday present the other day.  He asked if we could make him a cake and sing happy birthday.  Well, even though Jake isn't coming, assuming my test comes back with good results, maybe we can make that cake and celebrate on our own.

Could I maybe get one that's carbonated this time?

I knew this morning when my cell phone rang that it was not going to be good news. Usually when you get a phone call from your doctor, they aren't calling to tell you to have a good day and that you're the epitome of health.

So I'm backing out of the driveway, on my way to take Garrett to "school" and myself to work, when my phone starts vibrating in my pocket. I pull it out and see that my ob/gyn's office is calling me. Since I had my glucose tolerance test on Monday and was specifically told that I wouldn't hear from them unless it was bad news, I knew this was my bad news.

Lovely.

The nurse told me that my number was slightly elevated (who knows what that means, hopefully exactly what she said and not "Ridiculously high and you might as well go ahead and consider yourself a diabetic, but we'll humor you and do this additional test because we love billing you whenever possible.") and I needed to come back in for the 3 hour glucose tolerance test.

I really thought I was going to go crazy during the 1 hour test, I'm not all that sure how I'm going to survive the 3 hour test with my sanity intact and without passing out in the waiting room from not eating for 14+ hours. The sad part of that is, in the middle of my 1 hour wait, I got to pass some of the time by going back to pee in a cup, step on a scale, get my blood pressure checked, listen to the baby's heartbeat, and visit with my doctor. You would think with all of that to help pass the time, it wouldn't have felt like 5 hours of sitting in the waiting room rereading the same story in the same magazine over and over.

But next week, I won't have anything to pass the time, save for whatever I might bring with me into the office, along with any decent magazine I might be able to scrounge up. I wonder what they would think if I walked in with a laptop and asked them if they had wi-fi. Surfing the internet would atleast help to kill some of that time, and I could even blog about the crazy people that I see. But I'm not going to be that person. The one who appears to be so important and busy that they can't spend even a brief amount of time in the doctor's waiting room without being attached to their laptop and "working". So I'll stick with a book and hope that it keeps me entertained in between my chugging of the gross "drink" and getting stuck like a pin cushion. I have a bad tendency of feeling faint, so I think that my biggest worry is going from before midnight the previous night until noon the next day without eating anything. I should have a pizza delivered to my car for the minute that I walk out that door.

Sidenote: Yes, I realize gestational diabetes is certainly not the end of the world and just because I have to do the 3 hour test, it does not mean that I already have gestational diabetes. I have diabetics on both sides of my family so I'm pretty much doomed to eventually be diabetic. But I would prefer to not have to deal with this 3 hour test. I would almost rather they just tell me I have GD and get on to the diet that they'll give me. Since I have to endure this test, then I hope for good results, but it certainly won't kill me if they tell me what I don't want to hear.

Baby Update

I had another baby appointment this morning and everything went well.  When I checked in, the receptionist asked me if I wanted the orange or fruit-punch flavored glucose drink for my glucose test.  I've never tried the fruit-punch flavored one, and I am not the type of person for surprises, especially when the surprise is an extra sugary drink, first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach.  So I went with the gross orange one that I remembered from my last pregnancy.  They brought me a small bottle full of the drink and said I had 5 minutes to chug it.  I got it down pretty quickly and then sat and read a parenting magazine until they called my name.  I'm not sure why ob/gyn's waiting rooms are full of parenting magazines, but I couldn't find "People" to save my life.

My weight is down another 3 lbs (16 pounds total now, which is just insane, I'll be regaining all that as soon as Cooper's born, I can almost guarantee it) and my BP is normal.  My doctor found the heartbeat right away and my mind went blank when he asked me if I had any questions.  I had several, but completely forgot them at that moment.  I'm going to have to start writing them down for future reference.

The funny part was when I was in the waiting room for wait #2, and my doctor's nurse came to the door and said "Lydia".  So, naturally, I stood and walked to her.  Turns out, my doctor has another ob patient named Lydia who's due almost the same time that I am because today was also her glucose test.  That's just weird.  Probably not so weird to those named Jane or Mary, but when your name is Lydia, it's weird.

So now I'm crossing my fingers that everything is good from this bloodwork so I don't have to do the 3 hour test.

I'm in hopes that we're all on the mend in our house.  With the exception of a stopped up nose, I'm feeling much better and Garrett only has an occasional cough.

We're also very close to being able to move Garrett into his new room.  The painting is done, the curtain rod is up (just waiting on the curtains to be delivered this week), everything is vacuumed.  Now I just need to sort through and organize all his toys and books.  As soon as that's done, we'll move him over.  I think he's excited about it.  And I'm excited to have some semblance of order to his toys and things.  They've gotten a little out of hand lately.
